The Feller (Sawyer) is responsible for safely and efficiently cutting trees and removing hazardous vegetation in support of wildland fire suppression, fuels reduction, and vegetation management operations. This role requires advanced chainsaw skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work in high-risk, fast-paced environments.

Fellers work closely with fire crews, heavy equipment operators, and supervisors to mitigate hazard trees, construct firelines, and support overall fire response and prevention objectives while adhering to strict safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform tree felling operations to remove fire hazards and support wildfire suppression efforts

• Limb and buck downed trees into manageable sections for removal or processing

• Identify and mitigate hazard trees, including dead, damaged, or structurally compromised trees

• Assist with fireline and fuel break construction by clearing trees and vegetation

• Maintain chainsaws and related equipment, including sharpening, fueling, and routine inspections

• Work collaboratively with fire crews, equipment operators, and project leadership to execute operational objectives

• Follow all safety protocols, felling plans, and site-specific procedures

Qualifications & Skills:

​

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Prior experience in fire prevention, fire safety, forestry, or related field preferred

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions and safety procedures

• Clear and effective communication skills

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Physically capable of standing and remaining alert for extended periods in outdoor environments
